A New Spelling of Museum. Part 2
From M to Z: The Museum Ulm’s guest exhibition in the neighboring kunsthalle weishaupt is entering its second round.
What do Alemannic pearl necklaces from the 5th to 7th centuries have to do with gold cufflinks today? Curiosity, amazement and joy in beautiful, artfully crafted things are deeply human – and the leitmotifs of this exhibition.
Knitted stitches by a contemporary artist next to 1800-year-old Roman clay lamps: When fundamentally different objects from art and cultural history are shown side by side for the first time, surprising connections emerge across space and time. Beyond the boundaries of collection areas, paintings, textiles, everyday objects, sculptures and fragments, tools, stories and events from everyday museum life can be discovered with all the senses. From Mirabilia to X-Ray, the new alphabet of museum work allows other approaches to the exhibits on display and offers a glimpse behind the scenes of museum practice. All museum employees contributed to the concept by suggesting terms that they associate with the museum.
The exhibition is complemented by changing presentations on new topics. The opening event is figurative pouring vessels from the Middle Ages: so-called aquamaniles, from archaeological excavations in Ulm’s Olgastrasse, which are shown in cooperation with the State Office for Monument Preservation in the Stuttgart Regional Council.
